The Attack Surface

The Attack Surface is a newsletter featuring mostly writing from researchers on the Frontier Security team at the Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS).

Our team’s work focuses on a broad range of issues around the intersection between frontier AI and national security. We are especially interested in what happens when the most powerful AI systems meet the highest-stakes environments: AI-enabled cyber operations, AI in military and intelligence settings, and the challenges created when AI is used to accelerate its own development.

This newsletter is for members of the Frontier Security team to share thinking that’s more in progress, more accessible, and faster to publish. The posts reflect individual perspectives, not institutional positions. For our organization’s formal research, check out our published reports. Some posts will be quick reactions to breaking developments. Some will be arguments we’re still stress-testing. When we’re confident, we’ll say so. When we’re speculating, we’ll say that too.
